g3 Gas Technology
About
g3 gas: GE’s alternative to SF6
g³ is pronounced g cubed.
g3 technology to replace SF6 gas
Since the late 1960s, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) has been the gas most widely used in equipment for high-voltage electrical substations, the strategic nodes of the electricity grid, thanks to its remarkable insulating properties. The electricity transmission industry represents about 80% of the world’s use of SF6.
However, SF6 is listed as a greenhouse gas. If leaks occur, it generates 24,300 times more emissions than CO2, and can stay in the atmosphere for up to 1,000 years.
High-voltage products using g3 have several advantages
> Their mass of gas has a CO2 equivalent over 99% lower than SF6.
> They have the same performance as SF6 products.
> They have the same dimensions as SF6 products.
> They operate in the same temperature ranges, even in areas as cold as -25°C, with no risk of the gas liquefying.
> They represent the best alternative to high-voltage equipment using SF6, because at the time of this project, they have the best environmental life cycle analysis (LCA).
Our team is committed to the environment
We have always been working at improving environmental performance of our industrial offer. It means minimizing environmental impacts on all phases of the product life cycle: sourcing, manufacturing, transport, use, and end of life. Check here on CLEAN GRID.
The search for an alternative solution to SF6 began in 2008. GE Grid Solutions launched g³ in 2014. The first g³ project was implemented in the UK in 2017. Since then, the number of projects has risen steadily.
Our ambition
Offering g³ equipment for key high-voltage levels used in European networks within the next few years!
